July 1 Bible Bee quiz
Ben Watt is hosting the July 1st Bible Bee practice quiz at 4:00 PM EDT (8:00 PM GMT). We will use this blog post for the first one. We expect the quiz to last a little over half of an hour and there will be fifteen questions. For ten of the questions (the first five and the last five), I will post a comment with the text of a Bible Bee verse passage in all five Bible Bee approved versions (NIV, ESV, KJV, NKJV, and NASB) and you will have a minute to post the reference. For five of the questions (they will be in the middle of the quiz), he will post a reference and you will have several minutes to respond with the reference at the beginning, the verse text in the middle, and the reference again at the end. Please also include your version to make it easier for scoring. For example, if he comments with Genesis 1:1, the correct response would be something like this:
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 NIV
If you do not include your version in each comment, it makes it more difficult for the volunteers helping to score. Omitting a reference or your version will cost you a point for each occurrence.
You can receive a maximum of 12 points for each type of question. For details on the scoring for "recitations", please see below. For the questions where you post a reference for the verse text given, you will receive four points for the correct book, four points for the correct chapter, and four points for the correct verse number. For example, if you posted 2 John 1:9 instead of 1 John 1:9, you would receive 8 points.
Over half of the questions will be Primary verses and several may be drawn from the Junior verses.
If you would like to help score, please let me know after we finish the quiz by posting a comment with the text "helpscore" in it. Otherwise, it is difficult to keep track of who is helping. If you indicate that you would like to help score, I will have information about how to score and will assign you to a few people. You can then look for their answers on the page (CTRL + F in many browsers allows you to search and find their name and comments) and tabulate them on your computer. When you have a final score for a person, you will please post it in a comment with their name. When all scores are returned, this post will be updated with that information.

How we score recitations: The maximum score for a recitation is 12 points. Like the Bible Bee, leaving off a reference at the beginning or end of a "recitation" is a 1-point deduction, as is any one word error (one word omission, insertion, or change - like swapping "created" for "made"). You see above the correct response for reciting Genesis 1:1. Here is a 6-point recitation in NIV:
In the beginning He created the earth and heavens. Genesis 1:1
We start with 12 points, then evaluate the recitation: one point is subtracted for forgetting the reference at the beginning, another point is subtracted for using "He" in place of "God", two points are subtracted for switching "heavens" and "earth" (it was two one-word changes) and another point for leaving out "the" (second-to-last word). Additionally, we subtract a point because the response did not include the version. Please note that you cannot count more than 12 errors - i.e., no one ends up with a negative score on a passage. If you want to help score but have questions on how this works, please ask us for clarification.

What week(s) will the majority of this quiz's questions come from, if you don't mind my asking (just for the sake of knowing what to review over the next three hours)?

Christian - Mostly this week's verses (Week 4).
Really want to do this! But I am not sure how well I will do, because we got our stuff two weeks late..... So i am not yet on week 4 for verses :) (I don't normally do the verses in order, they confuse me when I am learning them like you'll have a whole bunch of Exodus and then you just get confused. If you know what I mean)
But i will try to be there! If not.... Good luck you guys!

I love NASB! Is is easy but hard at the same time :) I REALLY like that it is a word for word translation.

do we get points if we include the correct book/chapter/verse but can't remeber the whole thing? for the verses like Q 1-5? For example, lets say Ben put this verse up "In the begining, God created the heaven and the earth." If I didn't know the refrence but knew it was in Gensis somewhere, would I still get points for that??

oh yes - this is a question for the moderaters - what do "Level" on Memverse mean? Because I go on profiles and it says they are on "level one" or whatever :)
Rachel, you move up a level when you complete various assignements...like tagging verses, memorizing verses in specific categories, etc.
Rachel - Levels are a somewhat new feature to encourage everyone to understand how Memverse works and to memorize verses from various sections of the Bible. To pass each level, you must complete more "quests". If you go to your own Dashboard (under Account), you can see what you need to get to the next level.
David Stelzl Jr., that is interesting about the levels! That is neat that your scored me on 6-10 because I've been corsponding with your sister Sarah about the Bible bee. BTW we are in ATI as well :)

@Hunter McMahan--quizzes will be on Fridays at 4:00 EDT time. All of them have been on blog post comments for the past three weeks, but it's probable that the next one will be on a new Memverse feature specifically meant for quizzes like these.

Also, if you want to see if anyone else on Memverse is from either of those states, brush over the "Leaderboards" tab and click on "State Leaderboard." Then you can see if Louisiana or Mississippi is included there. Click on a state to see the people from Memverse that are in it.
One more thing. We all need to remember that adding extra comments can slow the Memverse system down, as Andy has said, so we should try to stay on topic. It's fun to chat, but here is probably not the best place to do it. :) Thank you!

WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!?!
Every time I add something into a comment it doesn't show it until I write another comment!!!! In the first comment I only wrote the first paragraph. When I tried to add the last two, it didn't seem like it had put it on the comment, so in the second comment I wrote that I had tried to add the last two paragraphs but it wouldn't let me. Then I proceeded to write the last two paragraphs. But when I had done this, I saw that it HAD added the last two paragraphs, so I tried to go back and delete the comment. It didn't seem to let me do that, either. So I wrote that last comment as an apology for writing the same thing twice, then I saw that the second comment HAD been deleted. So now I'm writing this comment as an apology for the confusion. Sorry!

@SBG A few days ago you asked about the people on memverse and what they wee doing and so on..... so here's my answer: My name is Rachel Ledford and I'm 10 years old in Primary. (Why I asked, Bethany) I just finished 5th grade and am homeschooled. It was exciting to see all these homeschoolers in the Bible Bee! My birthday is on November 17th.... extremely close to the date for how old you will be to see what catergory your in! I was nearly in Junior but just missed the deadline. : ) My younger sister is also in the Bible Bee doing Timothy Track and is 8. My older sister would be in Junior (at 13) but is not doing the Bible Bee. My younger sister does not use memverse and this is both of our's 1st year participating. I met President Bush (while he was still president) and his wife at 7. I am very good at spelling. My dad is a pastor at Westminister Church PCA. I'm very excited about the Bible Bee. I live in Butler, PA. I hope to meet some of you some day. Is anybody else around my area? Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Bethany, what time zone do you live in? I live in Central, and I think you do too, so 4PM EDT is 3PM for me, and maybe for you. Hope that helps.

Bethany - Like Sarah said, I think you are in Central time, meaning it would be 3 PM. BTW: To my knowledge most/all time zones, at least in the U.S., are whole hours apart. I can't think of an example of where two time zones would be half-an-hour apart... But there may be a case. :) Thanks.

Ok, so, yes, you would start the quiz at 3PM EDT. With me, I posted about 5 minutes before hand saying that we would start in 5 minutes, but then I waited about another 5 minutes to make sure everyone who wanted to participate was there. Just a suggestion. :)

@Ashley The Sword Study is pretty cool, but some things I can't answer. Like: Where do you feel different because you believe in God? My Answer: Nowhere. I guess for most people they would feel strange, like in school, but I just don't feel strange anywhere.
@Rachel--I kind of feel the same way. You're right when you say that some people might get teased for being a Christian at school or something, but I've never really encountered persecution any worse than a face from an unbeliever that says, "You're a Christian? So much for this friendship..."
Well, my Dad's a pastor so I'm always helping with tons of things and not usually at many places. But swim team would be my best answer for where I feel uncomfortable. I actually have a meet tonight at five.
